(INTRO)
Americans will eat nearly 22 million turkeys on Christmas and this month, pork sales will nearly triple as large holiday meals are planned. Most turkeys and pigs are grown in large factory-like warehouses that have harmful consequences for the environment, public health and animal health.
Doug Gurian-Sherman with the Union of Concerned Scientists says consumers can support a healthier system by purchasing organic or locally grown foods.
(GURIAN-SHERMAN)
THE TURKEYS AND PIGS WE EAT ARE RAISED MOSTLY IN CROWDED, CLOSED SPACES WHERE THEY'RE OVERFED ANTIBIOTICS TO ACCELERATE GROWTH AND MAKE UP FOR STRESSFUL AND UNSANITARY CONDITIONS. U-S-D-A CERTIFIED ORGANIC TURKEYS AND PIGS HAVE NOT BEEN FED ANTIBIOTICS, WHICH HELPS INSURE THAT THOSE SAME ANTIBITOICS WORK WHEN PEOPLE GET SICK. CONSUMERS WHO WANT TO SELECT PROTECT THEIR FAMILY'S HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT SHOULD BUY ORGANIC FOOD OR BUY FROM A LOCAL PRODUCER WHO DOESN'T USE ANTIBIOTICS.
